I was testing some proxies in Firefox's proxy panel. Picture this: you enter your localhost IP in the proxy box and click "apply this server for all protocols." The issue is that the SOCKS host is stuck on a Russian IP address. I don’t recall adding it earlier. The problem persists—changing the IP doesn’t help, and opening the window again just restarts it. What’s going on? My Firefox is up to date, but I’m worried I might have been tricked.

If you choose not to use a proxy and save, currently many people rely on VPNs...

It appears you might have some malicious software redirecting all your web browsing activity through an unidentified proxy server.

It seems you're trying to confirm whether a proxy is being used despite your intention. The internet appears responsive, and your IP address remains consistent. If you want to verify further, consider reinstalling Firefox and checking the network settings. For now, sticking with random free proxies might not be reliable, especially if they’re stuck in the SOCKS layer. Upgrading to Windows 10 could also help ensure proper functionality.

You could think about a portable version of Firefox to avoid repeating the same settings in the registry and local app directory.

Be cautious about malware; consider running everything in a sandbox or using a dual-boot setup for sensitive tasks. You might also secure the drive with diskpart. Launch CMD and run diskpart, then select your USB device with 'select disk 1'. Set attributes to 'readonly'—this doesn’t stop formatting, but I haven’t noticed any strong virus signs reformatting its contents.

Be cautious too much. Running antivirus software should protect you. Install the required app on your laptop and move it to your desktop via USB. If you're concerned, try using a Linux system and wipe the USB afterward.

What makes sense is that a Russian IP might be blocked because of its location or network restrictions.
