You experimented with PHP and local by flywheel alongside Atom in Firefox. You ran around with roughly 1.5 GB of RAM while working, then changed your desktop background from a downloaded file. Suddenly the system froze and desktop settings stopped responding except for some options. On Lubuntu you tried terminating processes and restarting with init 1 or 3, but it didn’t help. What could be causing this issue?

Consider removing the LXDE configuration files. Alternatively, try this method: open a TTY using Ctrl + Alt + F2 or F3, then press the appropriate keys (F2-F12) until you see a login prompt. It should delete your LXDE config files, which may reset your DE and restore functionality.
