I noticed my laptop often struggled in games, thinking GPU issues were the cause. After using NZXT Cam, I saw CPU usage exceed 90% while GPU stayed low at 10-21%. In Task Manager, it showed CPU over 90% and then dropped back to 5-14%. I’m trying to figure out what’s going on and look for a fix. I’m fine with a full Windows reset if needed, but that would be a last option.

It's normal for TaskManager to increase CPU usage when you open it, which usually isn't a concern. Using tools like MSI Afterburner can help check if the CPU stays high even when TaskManager is closed. Regarding the NZXT software, it seems to be a monitoring utility, though I'm not sure of its exact function. It's possible it's related to stealth malware that tries to hide activity. Lastly, without more details, it might just mean your CPU is limiting system performance while the GPU appears idle.

I attempt to play Fortnite at 720p with low quality, achieving around 20-30 frames per second. The GPU utilization stays near 17%, while the CPU remains consistently above 80%. I monitored the stats using NZXT Cam.

Confirming your setup. Is the game being played on an NVIDIA GPU? The MX250 isn't powerful enough to cause a bottleneck, but it shouldn't interfere with CPU performance in Fortnite. It might be using integrated graphics instead of the MX250.

It seems the system is utilizing the dedicated GPU. I configured Windows to prioritize the dedicated GPU and confirmed this in Task Manager during Fortnite gameplay.

Well, I’m reverting to the default setting. It seems like the CPU is the issue. You notice it getting hot during gameplay—it could just be overheating. Edit: I should note that. The MX250 isn’t a strong GPU; in fact, it’s even below the recommended minimum for Fortnite now. It’s odd how the usage stats look like this. But I don’t think you’ll see much improvement if you manage to identify the problem.

MX250 benchmarks exist and you should be able to enjoy 1080p low quality playback.

You've identified a thermal issue that's affecting performance. You're seeing improved frame rates at higher resolutions now, but you're open to exploring other solutions like cleaning the chassis internals.

Consider purchasing a laptop cooling pad equipped with fans to enhance airflow inside your device. Additionally, avoid placing the fans against carpets or blankets, as this can cause your laptop to overheat rapidly.
