CPU model changed to i9 9900KF. Cooler selected as Corsair H100i v2. Motherboard chosen is Gigabyte Z370P D3. RAM installed: 32GB Corsair Vengeance LPX at 3200MHz, two 8GB sticks. GPU installed: ROG Strix Vega 56. Power supply used EVGA G2 750W with 80+ Gold certification. Storage solution: Western Digital WDS500G2B0B 500GB M.2. I upgraded from the 8350K to the new CPU, updating the BIOS to version F15b beforehand just to be safe. Overclocking was smooth during the switch, but once the new CPU arrived, changes didn’t take effect. I tried using Intel XTU for overclocking, which helped a bit but wasn’t perfect. The issue seems to be that BIOS settings remained unchanged after the CPU swap. Anyone know why this happens? How can I get the 9900KF to respond properly? Thanks ahead!

Did you attempt to reset the CMOS while swapping the CPU? If not, now is an ideal moment. Jump the CMOS connector for ten seconds... Or take out the battery, shut down the power supply, and let it sit for ten minutes. You can press the power button to clear any capacitors. Reassemble the battery and turn on the PSU. Good luck!

Or take out the battery, shut down the power supply, and let it sit for ten minutes. You can press the power button to clear any capacitors. Reassemble the battery and turn on the PSU. Good luck!

He should perform a CMOS reset, but the guidelines are unclear. Following the manual, shorting the CMOS pins usually fails, so removing the CMOS battery is recommended. Turn off mains power from the motherboard and monitor, then press the case power button for 10–15 seconds. You might notice the motherboard LEDs flash briefly as capacitors discharge. Modern systems rarely require more than 10 seconds to drain, so timing isn’t critical unless it doesn’t work initially. An overclocker would detect this problem after a failed overclock and likely need a CMOS reset plus a BIOS update. Hope this assists.

The main change is resetting time and passwords without needing to remove the battery or use jumpers. It doesn’t require holding the power button—this isn’t mentioned in any manual. The process takes just a second to reset the caps. There’s a slight flicker of the diagonal LEDs once. I’m not sure if the chips were swapped during a bad flash or if the CMOS was cleared after the flash. Usually, after a failed flash, you can still save settings since they’re still stored. Most clear CMOS instructions say to remove the battery for 5-10 minutes and then use the jumper for about 5-10 seconds. Swapping the power supply must be done carefully. On some boards there’s a convenient CMOS reset button on the back panel, which makes it much easier.

I don't believe you've finished a CMOS reset; resetting the BIOS actually clears time, not just the BIOS itself. Generally, hobbyist boards can reset their BIOS passwords with a CMOS reset, though many OEM systems use passwords that stay intact. Be aware that some systems survive a CMOS reset without reprogramming, but you'll need to check your specific setup.

I've faced similar issues with the BIOS failing to save on my Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master MoBo. Have you attempted entering the BIOS, applying Restore to Default, saving modifications, and then rebooting? Then returning to make adjustments. This happened while working on DRAM overclocking or timing settings, with frequent small tweaks and crashes requiring a BIOS reset.

Remove CMOS and attempt a new BIOS flash. Same revision should work this time.
