It functioned properly the previous day but stopped completely yesterday. No messages appeared, nothing happened at all. I unplugged everything and reconnected it, but it still wouldn't turn on. CMOS reset didn't help, RAM checks also failed. The following day it started up unexpectedly without a post. Resetting CMOS after removing the CPU fixed it, but performance stayed the same. I turned it off for sleep but now it doesn’t power down at all and won’t shut when I press the power button. Could this be related to the power supply or the motherboard? I haven’t checked those yet because I don’t have spares and no one to lend. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The button could be faulty. Swapping a power switch on a desktop is fairly straightforward. http://rb.gy/2bc6h

You can swap the power switch for the reset switch quickly if you're in a rush. Simply disconnect the power button and connect the reset button instead. If this doesn't fix the problem, consider using a different PSU. It's not uncommon for older PSUs to become unreliable and require replacement. You might be able to borrow one from someone else without spending money. Often, you can locate many used PSUs from that time by checking with an electronics recycler.

Unfortunately the power button isn't the issue—it functions properly with other components. It seems the motherboard or power supply might be the problem.

I'll attempt a different power source. If that fails, it might be the motherboard.

The evaluation aims to confirm whether this part is actually responsible for the problem.
