No, I didn't purchase a Windows 10 CD key or a Windows 7/8 CD key.
Upgrading for free requires beginning the process through the upgrade feature on a properly licensed Windows 7/8/8.1 machine. You cannot simply format and then install cleanly. First, perform an upgrade to convert your existing license to Windows 10. If you have already reset your system, reinstall the previous OS before proceeding. You may generate the installation disk, boot from it, and select the upgrade option. Once upgraded and logged into a Microsoft account, you can erase the drive and start a fresh install if desired. If you attempted a clean install without choosing an upgrade but had Windows 8.1 and no license key, reinstalling 8.1 is recommended—most OEM models store the key in the BIOS. I previously made this error on my Asus netbook; it worked to reinstall 8.1 without entering a key and activate it via my Microsoft account. After that, I upgraded using the Windows 10 media. If you purchased a separate Windows 10 license and wish to retain your old license for another device, create the installation media and perform a clean install. If the license doesn’t recognize your purchase, select the skip option, then after installation log in with your Microsoft account to verify activation, or contact Microsoft support if it fails—automatic activation is usually handled.
