I've set up Windows 7 before, but just on an internal storage device. Adding OS to external drives can be tricky, except for Linux distributions, since the Windows installer usually doesn't treat them as boot options.

Even using a USB drive might not be possible if it connects to a USB 3.0 port. USB 2.0 should function properly by default. I recall installing Intel's USB 3.0 drivers during Windows 7 development. Regarding running Windows 7 from a flash drive, think about Windows To Go—it didn’t become popular, but it seemed functional... sort of. For fans of Windows 7, consider upgrading to a large SATA SSD and dividing it into partitions for each operating system you need. Install the older OS versions first, then add Linux last, all on separate partitions.
