Similar titles to Read Dead Redemption 2 or popular racing games work better with a gamepad. I purchased the latest Xbox controller for RDR2, and it feels superior to using a mouse and keyboard.
Looking for something other than StarCraft or Civilization? I enjoy playing all kinds of strategy games and use a controller for most of them.
Mostly I rely on the mouse and keyboard, except for space flight sims I enjoyed when they were popular—like Wing Commander and Privateer. I also play Elite: Dangerous, so getting back into that game is important. Some titles aren’t designed for joystick control even if they look suitable. Take Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries is one such game; I’d need a controller to aim properly with the joystick, but it wouldn’t fit my usual style.
Valhalla and that puzzle game featuring the fairy. Everything else works great with the controller. EXCEPT TIE FIGHTER, which is why I haven't played it before, even though I've spent thousands of hours using a controller in Acecombat—it's hard to imagine flying a plane with just a keyboard... In short, unless it's a point-and-click title, I always prefer a dual-shock controller. It's something that feels poorly supported on PC; I'd love to control everything with one, but Vista doesn't quite deliver. Xbox-style "blades" work perfectly, though only with the Xbox controller. Right? You know, I never play with kb/m—it just feels like work. With a controller, you can just relax and enjoy... I understand that for some games, kb/m might be better, but it still feels like a chore to sit there staring at the screen and pointing at dots. Not very fun, sorry!
I only use a mouse and keyboard for games like Diablo 3 or chess on PC. For anything else—even action-packed FPS—I rely on a controller. With age, I find it hard to adapt to a new input method; spending weeks—or months—struggling feels exhausting. My budget mouse and keyboard are mostly for basic navigation, not comfort. The real issue isn’t the device itself, but how my body remembers using controllers after years of playing with a controller. Even if it hurts now, I expect it to ease over time. Still, I’m leaning toward sticking with my PS4 pad and moving on.
