I searched for details about the 3970X and found that some components were missing, though the wiring appears intact. The issue seems to be with the processor, which isn’t working properly. I’m hoping fixing the capacitors would be simple, but I don’t have the original parts or their specifications. Do you know where to look for this information? It might be worth spending a few dollars on replacements instead.

Can you share a picture of it? It would have been tough to avoid certain capacitor failures before the chip even started working. Typically, PC voltage connections use capacitors in parallel, meaning as long as each rail has some capacitance, the chip should at least activate—though stability isn't guaranteed. To replace them, check the package dimensions on the back of the MLCCs; you can use calipers to measure a few and match that size. Order larger-capacity options if possible. Modern computers don’t strictly require precise capacitance values, but too little can hurt performance. Adding more than necessary is safer than risking failure. Solder the new caps onto the board (they’re nonpolar), and test whether the CPU powers on. Even if it doesn’t, you might still save money compared to buying a new one. In the worst case, you could lose a significant amount, but in the best case, you could recover a valuable machine.
