Yes, Linus created a video with Louis Rossman about the method, but it required a high-end setup. The process is quite challenging and can easily fail if things go wrong. A dedicated machine is necessary for this.

It’s referred to as a “ZIF” zero insertion force. Every laptop features this design or a similar variation to fasten the CPU. It’s the same with desktops. I’ve only come across budget Celeron netbooks like that. Everything is fully soldered. We were discussing an i7 ultrabook. A clown in the future won’t discuss disassembly unless you’ve actually done it yourself.

Many people assume your laptop’s CPU is permanently attached to the motherboard, but this isn’t always true. Some models use a soldered design, while others rely on clips or heat-shrink tubing. Others may have been disassembled for repairs or upgrades. It varies by brand and model, so checking manufacturer specs or seeing real examples helps clarify.

BGA stands for Ball Grid Array, a type of semiconductor packaging. More details can be found at the Wikipedia page on Ball Grid Arrays. For Intel's Core i5-5300U mobile CPU, additional information is available on CPU World.

Looking at the link provided, it appears to be a URL for an AliExpress product listing.

I was preparing to challenge everyone in this thread who said you can't swap a laptop CPU. Honestly, after my own investigation, they were correct. You really can't replace a laptop (BGA) CPU because it's permanently attached (you don't say?). The only reason I thought otherwise was that BGA CPUs are available on sites like eBay and Aliexpress. Now I understand those listings are meant for people with the right tools. Anyone who actually purchased a BGA CPU probably just wasted their money.
