You're considering using your W10 key to reinstall Windows on a new HDD and upgrading to 8.1. It's possible you can use the same key, but confirm with the vendor or check their current policy. Get the Windows 10 installer from a USB drive and attempt to run version 8.1 since that worked for you. If it doesn’t, you can purchase a Windows 10 key for $5 on eBay.
