Hello everyone, I’m preparing to assemble a new SFF rig soon and am finalizing my parts list. I’m planning to use an i7-13700KF for potential overclocking, but I noticed that Z790 boards from Canadian shops are quite expensive—sometimes even matching the CPU price. Would it be reasonable to pair an Asus ROG STRIX Z690-I with a 13700KF? I’m fine with updating the BIOS via USB if it comes with an older version that doesn’t support the newer CPU, but I’m curious about any significant features I might be missing by opting for older hardware. Thanks!

Motherboards might allow a Gen 3 M.2 slot to function as a Gen 4 slot, and generally I anticipate Z790 boards will support higher memory speeds than Z690 ones. That's the short version. From my experience with a Z690 board (Unify-X) running a 13700K, performance is more than sufficient—both for overclocking and overall features.
