Recently I decided I wanted to build a gaming PC, but hit a roadblock...I don’t have another Windows installation disk. I searched online for recovery disks and learned they’re essentially the installation media without the license key. I’ve tried making a bootable USB drive and all attempts failed. I’m curious—if I purchase a Windows recovery disk and install it into a brand new PC using my own key, would I get the operating system back? Thanks for understanding if this is confusing.

It’s not that complicated—just ensure the USB is large enough and the file matches the correct format. Small issues like a mismatched size or format can cause problems.

You already own a Windows 7 installation with a CD key. Windows 8 is available, but since Microsoft hasn’t released ISO images online, it might be a Windows 7 CD key rather than a Windows 8 one.

It employs Windows already set up and brings it back to its original settings. You still have to download the .iso file and build a bootable USB drive.
