You can't simply change the fiber connection. The ISP has an ONT installed nearby that handles the conversion. This ONT functions similarly to a modem. The problem arises if your ISP is AT&T, as they typically use a combination of ONT and router. While there are methods to bypass their device, it’s not easy. You’ll need significant expertise to set it up properly, and it could fail at any time. AT&T doesn’t support custom configurations. Your main option is to enable IP pass-through on their device and then connect your own router. Regarding the router, speed matters a lot for what you get.
Even with separate ONT and gateway (router), you must use the same setup. There could be tricky solutions, but ATT systems are built to deliver service just to the router they assign in their database, and only one will be registered. You need an ONT and router from ATT or a compatible model like BGW320. Only then can you proceed. Remember, after that it’s your responsibility—tech support won’t assist.
You're using the BGW210 or a similar Pace device. The BGW320 connects the fiber straight into it, making replacement much harder and bypassing the ONT box. While technically feasible with some technical tricks like certificate spoofing, it's more complex than with the BGW210.
