You only want minor changes, not a full system reset. On Windows 7, simply inserting the disk doesn’t trigger any updates, even when running setup.exe—it shows an update option but doesn’t let you pick which partition to update. This is important because you have both an OS X installation and a Windows 7 OS. Why do you need this info? Because you want to ensure your data stays intact while updating the Windows 7 version. The process allows you to choose which partition gets updated, so you can keep your OS X files safe.

Start the device but it doesn’t work; try opening the disk in Windows 7 and proceed from there.

When you insert the Windows 8 disk and boot from BIOS, you’ll see a choice of partitions to install on. Simply select the Windows 7 partition, and all your data will transfer to a Windows.old folder once the setup completes.

When placing the disk on Windows 7, it fails to load properly. Accessing the BIOS isn't possible on a Mac. During the Windows installation, when you select an upgrade option, can you pick the desired partition to update?

Upgrade possible with Windows 7 installation. It will simply install Windows 8 and relocate your previous files into a folder named windows.old.
