I've tried to find a solution using DriveImage XML for temporary OS storage on an external drive. I'm looking for a quick way to wipe my main drive and restore Windows without buying a disk. Any suggestions?

You'd require it each time you start the system.

It seems straightforward—just place the storage device in the drive and drag the Windows file to it.

I think there are solutions available I’m familiar with for moving data to an SSD. Please wait while others respond.
