I constructed this machine roughly three years ago, probably in 2019. Back then I wasn’t sure which components made sense, and this was my very first PC. Right now I can’t afford to buy more RAM that matches the performance I need, especially with the CPU I have. I didn’t realize at the time that my Ryzen 5 1600 only supports a certain RAM speed. I currently have 16GB of 3000MHz RAM and would love to know if it’s possible to run it at 2666MHz instead. When I do get to buy RAM, does the motherboard need to support that frequency or can any RAM work at that speed?
The RAM is currently operating at a specific velocity. For a Ryzen 5 1600 that doesn't match the expected rate, it's common to activate XMP and adjust the frequency down to 2933 or 2800 in the BIOS settings. This setting performs better than the default 2666. I've checked the top results for RAM on the list, but they seem empty. My motherboard is an Asrock B450 Pro 4, and I can adjust the speed settings if needed. However, I'm not sure about changing voltage or timings—should I ask for clarification?
This occurs when the system cannot send the XMP data. The easy fix is to open your BIOS, turn on XMP, and then change the RAM speed from the default 3000MHz down to a more compatible value such as 2933MHz, 2800MHz, or 2666MHz.
Oh ya I forgot to mention the ryzen 5 1600 at it's highest only supports 2667mhz
