I increased the voltage of my AMD Phenom II X4 965 around a year ago using a manual setting of x18 1.40625. Since the system would no longer idle, I recently returned it to stock. I just found out if adjusting the voltage to auto will allow the PC to resume normal operation instead of being stuck at 3.6GHz continuously.

It depends on how the BIOS manages voltages and C states. Just keep an eye on it; ato mode usually provides more voltage than needed.
