I've figured out that the microphone on my laptop—just a 16-year-old mono model—is actually the top choice I have. The machine runs Windows 98SE, and I'm curious about connecting it to another rig via the speaker jack. First, is this even feasible? If yes, what tools or software could make it work on that old OS? I’m not planning to upgrade the system, mainly because I rely on it for legacy applications.

It should work. But I'm not sure about the steps.

Make sure the system is configured to use the microphone input. Connect the laptop via its speaker output and the desktop via its microphone input. This should resolve the issue.

It should work, though I’m uncertain about compatibility. The game systems have evolved significantly, with most supporting only up to XP, and beyond that support ends unless you opt for a paid version.

You might face some problems with crosstalk and noise, especially with frequent audio jack use. It seems you're having trouble locating a suitable audio card for those ports. But it looks like your situation might be resolved.

I have Audacity set up, but I want to try it for streaming and voice recordings on YouTube. Plus, TeamSpeak too.

Do you own an iPhone or any other mobile device? It’s quite simple to utilize the microphone on that unit, similar to how you’ve used it before for capturing video recordings!
