I handle my work at a small museum, and a software update is requiring us to share some data over the network. We need three computers to access this information. Our current Ethernet setup doesn’t cover all devices, and we have an open public Wi-Fi that visitors can use. Can I create a separate secure network using the Wi-Fi signal to protect the data? I’m not very experienced with networking, so any guidance would be appreciated. Thank you!

The distance between those computers could vary, and adhoc might be a viable choice depending on your setup.

What kind of network configuration do you have? Usually you can modify the Wi-Fi settings in the app and assign a VLAN to the desired device. Alternatively, you might opt for a VPN connection.

Would be easier to just VPN in to make it secure... Now a word from our sponsors!...!...! TunnelBear! No one makes it easier to VPN to another country like tunnel bear does! With their sleek Map design and easy to navigate setup!

They share the same structure but are located in separate areas—some on different floors. We use voice-over-IP phones linked to another building, with Ethernet connections through those devices. Wi-Fi appears to be managed independently, likely set up by professional technicians. All devices can connect to the local Wi-Fi, though we also have five computers for public access and visitors who bring their own laptops. I have extensive technical knowledge, but my skills aren’t particularly advanced.

Consider your location and the sensitivity of data being moved through the secure network, such as customer information. Engage a professional to configure a safe network setup. Missteps can lead to responsibility—privacy regulations aren’t worth breaking.

There is no sensitive data; we operate as a small museum. My priority is protecting our collection records. I’m worried about visitors accessing our items, and we currently lack the funds for security measures.

There are various methods available. Some routers allow you to join a wireless network and then shield your devices from the firewall. Another option offers greater adaptability by purchasing a wireless repeater with a LAN connection. You can even disable the wireless extension feature on many models, enabling direct wireless access to a guest network. Then connect your RJ45 cable into the device’s bottom and route it through the router’s WAN port. This setup fully separates your network, so the next step would be to employ a VPN as a secure tunnel on your router. This ensures all traffic leaving the router goes through the guest network, staying encrypted and protected from tools like wireshark. It may appear complex, but in practice it involves just two devices and costs relatively little. You’ll need an affordable wireless repeater with a LAN port and a router that supports VPN connectivity.
