In particular I'm thinking about backwards compatibility for DDR4 (it's supposed to have DDR5 support). I don't imagine everyone's just going to transition to DDR5 immediately in 2021 when the technology comes out, especially since consumer dimms are supposed to come out later than that. DDR has never so far been backwards compatible and even had physical differences to prevent attempts to socket different standards into unsupporting sockets. Wonder if this time it's going to be the same? Does this mean one ought to save up for dimms as well as a mobo & CPU if one's willing to wait for Ryzens 5000 before upgrading?

DDR4 was introduced in 2014. It's time to transition forward.

It's not a major issue, but DDR5 is likely to be quite costly once it launches. You might still afford premium DDR4 units for now. Honestly, I think I'll sell my existing hardware when the time arrives, along with the rest of my current system.
