Notice, the setup has Windows 10 on my desktop but also a backup laptop. I thought installing another Windows 10 would be dull, so I considered upgrading to 8.1. However, I learned it might not be ideal. Alternatively, I could switch to Windows 7.

I don't think it's a bad operating system. It's actually my top choice. However, I thought it might be better to start with a clean installation of 10 for added security.
