I've been diving back into totalwar again, specifically Rome Total War: Barbarian Invasion with the Darth mod. I've tried some initial formations and thought I'd post this balanced army—maybe a bit too much cav in the visuals. Red represents swordsmen, blue for spearmen, yellow for archers, orange for generals, and purple for (often inexpensive) cav. I also discovered a tactic that works well: if they target the archers, I quickly push in with swordsmen. I haven't included cav in the frame, but it's effective sometimes. Are there other formations you'd like to share?
I typically hurry through things like a man and wish for the outcome to be good :^)
i never do that, a 2 k/d ratio (i kill 2 of them they kill one of mine) is a great loss in a battle for me, a 4 k/d ratio is acceptable, but im always aiming for a 5 or 10 k/d ratio and belive me, that is needed when you are battling hordes of enemies in barbarian invasion, they come in packs of 5 with about 2000 men each
Consider another mod that surpasses Darth Mods—it also delivers a solid experience. For Rome, all other Total Wars Darth mods are impressive, just like this one for Rome. Which nation are you commanding? Spears work best on the flanks, particularly against Javelins or Pila. Heavy Inf is powerful; deploy slingers from Rhodes or those starting on the island west of Rome. To defeat Heavy Inf, use troops from Rhodes or the island forces. In campaigns, your strategy differs from Mp—focus on keeping units alive to boost their ranks. Build a mix of strong armies and more mediocre ones to manage rebellions or maintain stability in cities. Peasants are excellent for handling unrest.
I am playing as the Saxons and have come to understand that spears are weak, lacking upgrades or any improvements. I’m switching them for more swordsmen instead. Shouldn’t the spears be positioned at the front so they can easily withstand a cavalry assault, and if you need to rush them into battle, they’d be harder to organize? In my empire, I have around ten cities, each with two full armies of swordsmen and two archers. This setup helps defend against sneak attacks—mainly from the Vandals—and allows me to quickly move troops between cities when needed. I’ve only used the Darth mod and haven’t tried other mods beyond that, since I wasn’t sure about any better non-overhaul options at the time. I’m open to using them later if they prove useful.
Rome's early warriors were quite disappointing. The best options were hoplites and phalangites, though they struggled against tougher troops like hastati. Many view Rome positively, but the truth is it shared the same flaws as other Creative Assembly titles—glitches, odd navigation, and uneven gameplay.
