Hello, seeking a first PC setup for smooth gaming at 1440p Ultra with 30fps. You have a GTX 970 G1, i5-4460 CPU, Corsair CX600W, 8GB DDR3, 1600MHz RAM, 1TB HDD, Gigabyte H81M-S2H motherboard, and a Fractal Design case. You're interested in running games like Witcher 3 or GTA V in ultra settings at that resolution. Need advice on whether this configuration will handle those titles smoothly? Thanks for your help!

Ultra in GTAV might be taking it too far. Add an extra £50 and you'll get an SSD. Samsung 850 Evo or OCZ Arc 100 make solid budget picks, while XFxx or similar could offer a better PSU for the same cost or even cheaper than Corsair CX. These options aren't typically well-priced.

It handles most games smoothly at 60 FPS on medium or higher settings. Disable the AA for better performance.

That’s great to hear! An SSD would likely speed things up significantly compared to a traditional hard drive.

I'd like it in 1440p Ultra with 30fps, just like on the PS4.

Using high settings with just 2x MSAA can yield 40 to 55 FPS in these games. Skipping anti-aliasing and FXAA helps maintain a steady 60 FPS. There are a few advanced sliders in GTA5’s settings that you shouldn’t push to their limits. Some adjustments hurt performance without offering real benefits, so it depends on what you’re aiming for. The GTX 970 still presents challenges.

It will speed up booting and loading times significantly, making the system feel much more responsive. The only minor impact is on open-world maps where loading happens instantly—60fps should be smoother. Adjust the settings to your preferred balance between performance and visual quality. This price offers great value compared to similar builds on PCpart Picker, which was just over £610.

I use a newer I5 with a 2GB 770 for 1440p, paired with a separate 1080p monitor that isn’t used for gaming. It works fine and handles most games smoothly, though it lags slightly in tougher titles. A few tweaks to settings can improve performance. The 970 will definitely bring 1440p gaming to life.

I’m guessing the settings that really hurt your FPS are the ones you least expect. Just starting out with this stuff, right?
