Looking for better Wi-Fi in your small garage under $40. You found some extenders for around $30, but some reviews say they don’t work well. Right now, when you’re in your car near the garage, you lose cell signal and depend on Wi-Fi that barely reaches 1 bar.

Many people claim they don’t work due to improper usage. Often they place the extender where they think they need stronger signal, but it lacks any real signal or has very weak reception, so it just amplifies the existing noise. It should be positioned between areas with good and poor signal. Still, it’s not ideal. Setting up an Ethernet cable and a basic access point is a far more effective approach.

WiFi extenders are frequently referred to as WiFi repeaters. They need to operate within the wireless signal area or be linked via Ethernet to function properly. When placed at the edge of coverage, they can expand that range. Affordable models usually use outdated technology and older protocols. Devices supporting modern protocols are less likely to work with them.

Consider a powerline starter kit with built-in Wi-Fi access. Your internet travels through power lines into the garage, then connects to a wireless router inside. The setup avoids signal blockage from walls and metal, and these kits are affordable at 50-60 dollars for quality options.

Powerline Ethernet works well when conditions are right. The main issue is that it depends on the home’s electrical setup, which wasn’t designed with this technology in mind, leading to inconsistent performance.
