X99 boards are compatible with Xeons and most ASRock models include ECC support. While they aren't inexpensive, spending around $150 on a motherboard for a free PC can be reasonable.

Thanks in advance for the guidance! That would be really helpful. Actually, I'm curious if this applies to every X99 board. I was checking out X99 motherboards and noticed that the Asus product pages only mentioned i7 CPUs, not Xeons. However, the Asrock page lists Xeon support: https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Fatal1ty X99 Professional Gaming i7/index.asp#Specification Yes, the system includes 4x4GB RAM sticks and they're not ECC, which should be fine!

They rarely include Xeons in the listings. Most of my rigs have been Xeons—just an i7 in one motherboard that doesn’t support Westmere-EP—and none of them needed Xeons to work properly. You can also look for deals; I found a used EVGA X99 Classified for $99, which is usually priced above $200 unless it’s on sale.

Hello! Welcome, I'm a 65-year-old newcomer from Belgium, just starting out with my Dell T5610 parts and eager to assemble my first photo-editing machine. I’m looking for all the guidance possible. The Fatal1ty X99 Professional Gaming i7 seems promising, but my workstation uses DDR3 RAM. Will that fit? I’d love to install everything on the motherboard and fit it into a sleek, modern case. Please, give me all the advice you can. I have good SSDs (like the Samsung 870 QVO 2TB), 64GB of DDR3 memory, an Xeon processor, Nvidia Quadro K4000 graphics, plus my original power supply and a Corsair CX 430. Could someone help me list what I need to build this setup? I’m not interested in gaming, just using Lr, Luminar AI, Nik Collection, and maybe a few others at the same time. Thanks a lot to everyone here!
