Yes, the bent pins on AM5 affected my CPU.
I modified and sold my CPU (7800x3D) for an 8700G, but it slipped into the AM5 socket unexpectedly. I managed to bend the pins back as much as possible and installed the new chip. It seemed to function, though I wasn’t sure. I can’t run games or graphics-heavy apps because the display driver keeps crashing (or freezing). DX11/12 or VK won’t help. I bought a budget board (the MSI x670e Tomahawk from AsRock) and reinstalled Windows, defaulting the BIOS. The issue still exists. I didn’t have problems with the old CPU, but I can’t confirm it was the same part. I’m considering using a single stick RAM and swapping it later, but I doubt that fixes it.
Could you explain why this happened? The likely causes are either a gap in the substrate layer or an excessive voltage being applied to a power rail. The first scenario is easy to spot if you examine the edges of the substrate. The second is less likely, but there are safeguards that would stop the system, and the pins affected are extremely improbable. If this was a clean Windows installation, it probably points to a faulty CPU—consider returning it for repair. A few AMD drivers might trigger this issue with Chrome or Steam acceleration, though it's rare. You could try updating or switching drivers to see if the problem resolves.
I was just testing with the latest X3D, but I only have the budget to try a few drivers. Do you think my MSI might be damaged?
I hope it works, I'll test a Linux distribution and play Tomb Raider.
If I'm reading right, the 8700G has never worked fine in either the old (possible damaged) board, or the newer cheap board? I think this could point to either the 8700G is faulty, or there is some software thing you're doing the same on both that isn't quite right. I note it was stated the 7800X3D was sold. It would have been interesting to put that back and see if that works in either board. Personally, I wouldn't sell the old hardware being replaced before I'm reasonably confident there is no problem with the new one. So at least I'll have something to fall back on.
Just arrived home, planning to try Manjaro Cinnamon (it doesn't really matter, pop OS, xubuntu). Let's check it out. Running Steam: Kingdom Rush - works on Lifeless Planet - Besiege - testing Tomb Raider mechanics, proton effects. If I can handle these games already, maybe similar ones exist!
