So, as some may know, I built a 5900X configuration using an Asus TUF B550-PLUS in March. I installed a WD Blue SN570 1TB and a 2x16 CL16 Ballistix DDR4-3200 setup. After a few months, I noticed multiple cold starts without video, which turned out to be POST failures on the DRAM. I tested each DIMM separately, and both worked fine—each booted without problems. The board’s debug lights looked like a malfunctioning traffic signal even after swapping the memory modules and GPU. It was assumed the hardware was faulty and it's now in RMA diagnosis. Sounds straightforward, doesn't it? Expecting a long RMA process, I bought an ASRock B450M-HDV and used 3600X, keeping the original SN570 and one 16GB Ballistix. It seems to perform well, showing no high usage in Task Manager. I wondered if swapping another DIMM might help. No boot when using the other slot. I double-checked for correct placement and tried again, still nothing. The situation gets more confusing... I removed the existing DIMM it worked, replaced it with the one suspected to be faulty, but it still didn’t boot. Swapped it back to the known good one and it started working properly. What’s notable is that these memory modules were registered on the board as a full 32GB from the start until the system was taken apart for RMA. I used to believe RAM was either perfect or completely bad. Could it be that a DIMM gradually became unstable over time, leading to intermittent failures? That might explain why my original build had inconsistent issues but could also mean a faulty module contributed to long-term damage.

Ram tends to become unstable when it reaches certain speeds, often leading to seizures. My LPX stick works well up to 2666, but beyond that it causes erratic behavior. The other stick performs better up to 2933, though issues still arise with my mem controller and motherboard.

Today the machine with the best functioning DIMM began showing strange issues where audio would stop, sometimes both audio and video, but only during gaming. Watching an MP4 doesn’t seem to trigger it. Could a failing DIMM cause this kind of behavior? I thought it would lead to a complete crash rather than just these glitches. I also discovered a possible explanation for my first problem. It appears Crucial produced this product in both single and dual rank versions, though mainly the dual rank. Some claim dual rank is superior for gaming, but my Asus board seems very selective about dual rank—only a few kits on the QVL are dual-rank. The Patriot VIper 4 Blackout I’m planning to buy for the redux is single rank, while another Patriot kit on the QVL is dual rank, possibly with different timing and voltage settings. Is there any link between certain timing configurations working better in dual rank versus single rank, especially at specific speeds, or perhaps with XMP/DOCP settings?
