Fast roaming is turned on in the UniFi Controller and then deployed across all new-generation adopted UniFi APs using the latest firmware. It's important to note that client-side support is required for this functionality to operate correctly.

Ubiquiti gear can become quite costly, yet it doesn't require a complete Ubiquiti setup to get started. Components can be added later as needed. I previously tested the UniFi Controller on a computer but faced issues when the system crashed, losing configuration. An RPi3B replaced it and also enabled PiHole. Ultimately, I chose a CKGen2 for reliability: power failures can corrupt the controller on an RPi, and a shutdown isn't smooth. Installing a UPS prevented firmware updates from being interrupted during outages, which helped avoid expensive replacements.

Additionally, if you prefer a single device, consider the UDM (non-Pro) option, which includes the UniFi Controller, and then add UAP-AC-Lites as required.

Check all available AP options for this setup. The UAP-AC and its updated version do not include Fast Roaming support. Other AC models do support it. Locate the UAP-AC (first generation) in the first column of this guide to ensure reliable coverage in your home or areas without WiFi.

The EoL models UAP-AC and UAP-AC v2 are not interchangeable with the UAP-AC-Lite version. They aren’t available for purchase on Ubiquiti’s site. Share a drawing of the building layout highlighting Ethernet connections, modem locations, existing Wi-Fi access points, and zones where connectivity is weak.

The UAP-AC-Lite belongs to Generation 2 APs. It differs from the models shown earlier, which have a square design.

I made a really bad drawing in paint. I’ll check if I can improve it tomorrow on my iPad. Red marks are the places with direct Ethernet, orange shows one spot with both Ethernet and a switch downstairs. The main AP on the first floor uses direct Ethernet because I’ve run a cable under my heaters for my Apple TV.
