Just received a notification from Windows about an update and a reboot was required. I allowed it to proceed, expecting the Fall update, but everything changed once I gave it a chance. After restarting, my programs that start with "Windows" were disabled, and most settings were reset. Chrome, Steam, Blizzard/Battlenet, Origin, and my display fusion code disappeared. The Corsair Utility engine was clean, and this was all resolved within the first eight minutes. Someone else has similar experiences? Last time I installed a major Windows update, it crashed and forced a full reinstall. Windows never warned me about losing settings; it just said to restart now or in two hours. I’m considering disabling updates and sticking with this version until the end. Updated October 26, 2017 by matt0725
I believe I didn’t set up an insider release. The system simply reported that I received an update. I usually don’t think of myself as tech newbie, but wow! This is happening a second time with Windows.
Additionally, the corsair utility engine lost its keybinds on my keyboard. It’s quite frustrating to resolve.
I made the latest improvements, restoring Chrome to its default state and bringing Spotify back to normal. That's roughly all the changes I've done so far.
I attempted to use Ccleaner to try and restore my registry to its previous state, hoping it would help. To my surprise, it successfully cleared my documents folder without affecting my resume or other files. Using this PC for school would be a disaster. The C drive was completely wiped clean, while the D drive remained intact. It’s possible regular users could face serious issues with just an automatic update.
I lost the ASUS Sound Manager app, which stopped working properly. It also messed up the audio menu popup every time I connected a headphone jack. The shortcut for Sleep now seems to cause the computer to hibernate or restart instead of just powering on. When I log back into Windows, the system stays in the same state as before, even though it should reset like after sleep. I also had to turn off system restore again.
I’m working smoothly so far. The only oddity is my browser always starts as Windows even though I limited it. Also, leaving anything open when shutting down tends to bring it back on startup without any clear reason. Everything seems restricted now.
You're in Georgia, but it's 4 AM in New York. I wasn't expecting a Windows reinstall right now. I should check the system restore settings, maybe the page file is misconfigured—it's really frustrating.
