pfsense and openwrt can transform an old pc into a functional router. though, you’ll still need a router or a dongle to link to the internet. I flashed openwrt a few years ago and believe it can work in that role.

It's really been a while... Customizing existing routers is definitely worth considering. Besides OpenWRT, I'm also aware of Tomato.
