Hello, I just got my 13900ks installed under it with the NH-D15 and a thermal grizzly layer. After running a cinebench r23 test, everything seemed fine. I tested on an open bench, but my RAM is a bit too high for the second fan, which is about 1cm too big. Right from the start, temperatures reached 90°C and then 100°C shortly after. None of the cores exceeded 5600MHz (throttling to around 5500 after hitting 100°C). My score was 37767, which is well above average. Under load or after a stress test, it cooled back to 35°C. Compared to others with similar builds, it felt like I was missing some CPU power. The results are great, but I wonder if I missed something since others seem to achieve higher scores. Is this typical?
To lower the temperature of the 13900KS, you'll need a large 360mm AIO or a 420mm AIO, or a tailored cooling solution. Even with strong case airflow in a cool environment, the NH-D15 may not stop thermal throttling. Also, do you have an Intel LGA 1700 contact frame? Something similar to this...
D15 isn't strong enough on its own; you'd need an excellent air cooler or a custom loop with the 13900Ks for real performance.
Oh wow, I had no idea this was something! I'll check it out. Thanks a ton for all your help—I feel more confident about my CPU (and build setup) now. Just a note, I used the Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML360R before, but I went with the NHD15 because of the noise. I won't jump back into liquid cooling anytime soon since I'm loving this quiet setup right now.
There are various contact frames available from brands like Thermalright, Thermaltake, Thermal Grizly, and others on AliExpress. They all perform well. I concur with Arctic—their radiators are robust and substantial. The 280mm model stands up better than many 360mm alternatives from other manufacturers. Their 420mm version is impressive. I own an EK-AIO D-RGB 360mm AIO, but I think it might not suffice for a high-end Intel 13900K. I’m hoping it will work fine for my upcoming upgrade (planning to install a Ryzen 8000). ML360R units have reported issues with faulty pumps, possibly affecting some models.
