Yesterday I switched to Windows 10 on my main PC. While installing games, I noticed the Windows.old folder. I understand what it does and its size is listed as 12.1 GB on my SSD, which seems excessive. Should I remove it? Or are there other recommendations? Thanks ahead!

I don’t know if it’s a good plan yet, but I’ve taken it off my mind.

Have you observed any issues or would you suggest removing it?

You can remove everything without any consequences from your previous Windows setup.

If you're unsure about the item, don't remove it—this might be backup copies of your operating system!

Consider transferring the data to another drive to free up the 12GB SSD space.

Keep it private until you're certain about what you're dealing with. You can safely remove it from your old OS setup, especially if you don't plan to downgrade. If you're unsure, it's better to hold onto it just in case it impacts a rollback. Better safe than sorry!

I would wait until you choose to keep using Windows 10. If you must, you could shrink the folder, but I’d go ahead and overwrite it if necessary. Since Windows 10 isn’t ready for drivers yet, I’d likely create a backup somewhere just in case you need them later.

I completed the upgrade, located the same directory on my SSD, removed it, performed a factory reset on Windows 10, and carried out a clean installation without losing any data. Since I keep my files on my 4TB WD Red drive, everything worked smoothly.
