i was browsing pcpartpicker and spotted the threadripper 1900x. i thought it would be great to have an 8-core cpu, so i started building my pc. when i looked up the price, i saw it was around $200. that reminded me of what early threadripper users paid for. i considered swapping my ryan 5 3600 for a threadripper board, especially since i’m planning an matx build and it already has all the features i need. it’s only $200 more than my b550 board, which is a bit steep compared to the price drops since b550 and x570. i’m wondering if it’s worth it, especially for gaming performance and compatibility with rx 480/580 or even an 1070.

It performs poorly in gaming. A 3600 will completely ruin it.

It would look great as your dad's desktop and design. You're not dumb at all!

The reason it doesn’t work well in games is still unclear to me.

also worth mentioning is that it isn't an am4 socket, which means upgradability wouldn't be possible

The zen+ and zen 2 threadrippers would genuinely engage with the 3600, while the 1900x excels in more design-focused projects across 3D and 2D using multi-core processing.

However, honestly, the Threadripper from 1990 would likely ruin a 1600 or 1700 Ryzen processor.
