Hey everyone. I placed a new PSU because my old one is Chinese and doesn’t have the 8-pin connector needed for my new GPU card. My motherboard has an 8-pin CPU power connector, but my current PSU only supports 4 pins. The new PSU will come with an 8-pin CPU power connector. Should we connect all 8 pins or stick to the 4-pin setup? Maybe my CPU isn’t getting enough power? Intel says the i5-8400 can hit 4 GHz in turbo, but I’m only reaching about 3.75 GHz max, which is pretty shaky—jumping between 3.6 and 3.75 GHz.

The i5 8400 features all-core boost at 3.8Ghz. A 4Ghz boost speed applies to half of the cores. Ensure your power supply unit has all necessary connectors; otherwise, consider upgrading to a better PSU.

Yes, once you install the new power supply, connect all eight-pin CPU cables and you should be good to go.

However, avoid using a budget PSU with power-saving tricks, c-states, turbo boost, or unstable base clock—those can cause your clock speed to fluctuate constantly. As mentioned before, all cores run at 3800 MHz, but they may vary slightly, which is typical.

Only four pins are needed, the rest can be ignored. Plugging in all eight won’t cause issues.
