Its not going to cause any physical damage, as you arent actually "cutting" power directly (like unplugging it). It is not the same as clicking shut down, which waits for any pending writes and closes properly.
That said, if there is any data being written to storage, you run the risk of losing it or even corrupting the whole drive.
Why do you want to turn it off via the front button though? It physically takes longer than clicking shutdown.
There is a particular game I regularly play, unfortunately it contains cheaters which makes me worry about malware risks. I decided to quickly shut down the computer to stop them from accessing my system. Although I have a solid antivirus, it doesn’t have a real firewall, and I prefer not to depend solely on Windows 10’s built-in protection. Thank you for the detailed and helpful information. The developers of this game seemed distracted by other projects, so the one I use is outdated. They do release maintenance updates, but that’s about it—serious issues like RCE are fixed, yet the game still lacks strong anti-cheat measures. I know I shouldn’t be playing it, but it’s one of those games I enjoy, and there’s nothing like Red Dead Redemption 2 Online.
Cutting power to your system doesn't really stop malware from occurring if it's going to happen at all.
You might close the game faster than physically accessing your PC case.
In fact, this is just a hypothetical scenario—you could also prevent your AV software from functioning properly, allowing malware to install before your system even starts up.
Well, it might turn out this way: Question - Pressed the power button to shut down the PC, but now it needs to restart. I was playing a game and my whole system froze. I couldn't press AlT+F4, Ctrl+Alt+Del or Alt+Tab. So I held the power button and turned it off. Now whenever I turn it on, it will briefly come back on before shutting down again. I keep doing this until I manually stop it... forums.
All right everyone, I chose not to proceed because it’s way beyond what I can handle given my high level of paranoia. Thanks to the careless developers and odd requests from Microsoft, I’ve been paranoid for a long time. Accidentally opened MS Edge, and then suddenly a very white eye appeared in the search box with the Bing AI logo because it updated itself right away when I clicked the wrong icon. Overwhelmed by pop-ups and unnecessary software trying to set my browser as default, I blocked its internet access through the firewall and removed all MSEdgeUpdate files from my system. This is enough of a hassle for you.
Also, my paid antivirus license expires in a few days, so I’ll be using either the free Kaspersky or Bitdefender version. I don’t have a solid firewall or Windows security set up, but these options offer strong ransomware protection that really blocks threats. I guess I just rely on them since I know firewalls are essential these days. Maybe they can cover up the firewall function for me.
Thanks all for your responses and feel free to help me learn more about Windows Security features if you have time.
If you're dissatisfied with Windows Defender's firewall, you might develop or purchase a pfSense (or comparable) firewall and master how to craft rules that prevent known malicious port numbers.
With the rapid processing speed of modern computers, by the time you suspect a virus is active, it might already be too late to halt the infection. No firewall or antivirus solution can be assured of blocking every attack, even with products rated at 100% effectiveness.
If you own the Professional edition of Windows, think about running your game in a Virtual Machine to ensure separation from the primary operating system, though this could become challenging if the game demands direct GPU access.
I've never seen any game that can transfer malware from cheaters. Cheating is a host pc hack which affects their game only, you just get to see the results. You do not have direct access to another's pc or vice versa, it's all going through the game server, which is highly firewalled and protected from outside influence.
Basically their cheats cannot affect your pc.
Shutdown through Windows or risk data loss/corruption as pushing the button has same consequences as pulling the plug. Sudden shutdown will not affect hardware, only software.
