I haven't encountered a situation quite like this. After installing several operating systems, I still have one leftover installation on its own partition with minimal space left. It consumes around 25GB out of a 50GB drive. I'm trying to free up space for Windows 8, but every time I attempt to format the partition, it reports an error saying "Windows was unable to complete the format." If you have only one hard drive, would you be able to format it during the installation process when prompted?

It doesn't look promising—the drive seems to be failing. Consider using a live GParted disc to check if you can format it properly.

You could try using the command prompt to reformat the file. It might help bypass the Windows formatting issue.

I believe the drive is no longer functional. Was this a priority for you? Would you like recommendations for a replacement?

It doesn't seem like the drive is completely failed, just a specific partition issue. The other partitions appear to be fine.

It could indicate an issue limited to specific areas of the drive, especially during the creation of a new partition. This means reading from it (using an existing partition) should work, but writing might not. If none of the applications function, there may be another reason. As a final step, try formatting directly in NTFS using ccleaner and check if Windows identifies the partition.

Have you attempted removing every partition during the Windows installation setup and then forming one unified main drive?

It functioned a bit, I adjusted the layout using CCleaner as recommended, then received a notification that Windows needed to format the partition before use. When I attempted to format it again, it reported an error stating "Windows was unable to complete the format." After turning off the machine and restarting it this morning, I encountered another issue: "Missing operating system." I tried various fixes—reinstalling Windows 7, then 8—but when using the setup tool on a bootable USB stick, it warned that installing Windows 8 on my HDD wasn't supported. Eventually, after rebooting and removing the USB, Windows 8 appeared installed. That seems unusual, right? Thanks for your patience; I tried to clarify everything to the best of my knowledge.

Uncertain about what occurred, but at least it might function.
