Upgrading to Windows 10 from 8.1 gives you a month to roll back. It seems you might be able to do it again because it remains eligible.

I switched from Windows 8.1 to 8 by mistake on my laptop, then moved back to 8.1 from 8, and finally from 8.1 to 10 again. That’s possible.

You can simply lower your settings as usual, and when you want to improve, just go through the regular upgrade process.
