He should consider keeping his existing G. Skill 2666 DDR4 parts. They can still function, though not at peak performance, until he can afford a replacement board.

It's tough to say; sometimes it functions and other times it doesn't. The main thing I noticed was that certain unique features might not work on the board.

I've always had no issues with RAM compatibility, so I rarely check the specifications, especially when purchasing from a trusted company like GSKill.

Manufacturers can't possibly evaluate all available modules, their catalog reflects only what they've already checked. FYI, RAM compatibility depends more on the CPU's IMC than the motherboard. The motherboard often sets the speed limit for RAM, as it won't help if the CPU isn't compatible.

I think pairing the B550 motherboard with a Ryzen 3000 series chip A 2666MHz setup shouldn't cause issues. The main challenges were seen in earlier Ryzen generations where the IMC was frequently the issue.
