I own a 500gb hard drive. Installing the OS was failing—Windows 10 didn’t boot, and Ubuntu caused crashes with Read/Write errors. The drive shows 6k+ bad sectors in Sentinel, health at 9%. It seems the drive is likely beyond repair. Are there any options to fix these errors at the software level?

Hard drives handle this by rearranging data into reserved areas on the disk. If errors persist despite this process, the drive will likely fail permanently. You'll need to swap it out with a new one. For precise fixes, you could create partitions near the damaged sections and leave gaps, but this is only a temporary solution since the drive will eventually stop working.

Join the discussions! We can't repair faulty areas. These are physical issues on the disk surface that affect its ability to hold information.

It's improbable there are sufficient spare sectors available to address such a large number of failures.
