I don't believe it's about dependability. My last check (around 2016?) shows my single-core Athlon XP 1700+ from about 2001 is still functional—available in a display case now. The same applies to my Athlon 64 X2 6000+, Phenom II X6 1090T, and FX-8350 that I pushed to 5.0 GHz with close to 1.5V. Before AMD introduced Ryzen, there were a couple of uncertain years (2012–2017) where Intel consistently outperformed AMD. 'Bulldozer' was strong, but its refresh wasn't ideal... Now it seems the situation has reversed. Recently, the new AMD Ryzen 3 3300X is being compared to the Intel i5-9400F, and the issues have affected Intel's performance noticeably.
