Your CPU might have been the quickest when launched, yet after a few years it could slow because of the software. The outdated architecture and instructions of older CPUs may not match modern programs. Running the CPU with software from its peak time would produce similar results. Over time at high speed, your 2600k slowed down noticeably. However, with an optimized OC running at a reduced voltage, the chance of further degradation is much smaller.
