That sounds like a smart plan. Having a bootable drive with Windows lets you switch between systems easily, while downloading Linux first gives you flexibility. It’s a practical approach for testing or switching environments.

I don't think that there is any problem with that. Just make sure that this bootable drive is decent speed, unless you want to wait for Windows to boot up and all processes to initialize until you retire

It definitely simplifies things by using a separate second drive for dual-booting, and it also minimizes the chance of mistakes. I’ve set up Windows and Linux on two distinct devices just for this ease, avoiding the hassle of complex partitioning.

I believe using an SSD will provide sufficient speed.

Yes; dual-booting might be a better choice, but an external NVMe SSD works great if portability is important. Edited April 22, 2021 by NunoLava1998 Clarified the confusion about whether you meant a single external drive or two separate internal ones.

You have several options, and it’s likely the most effective one. You can also install Linux on a USB drive, though it may not be the ideal experience.

I prefer not to set up a dual boot, as it feels a bit overwhelming and I don’t want my computer to stop working properly.

Linux running on a PC, whether on a dedicated drive or separate, is generally seen as a dual-boot setup unless it's a virtual machine.

It seems like you're suggesting that most alternatives to using a virtual machine would involve dual booting. There are various approaches to achieve this.
