I'm also a 720p gamer. My computer struggles with 1080p due to heat and slow performance, but I'd prioritize smoother frames over ultra-high resolution. I'm okay with lowering the resolution to 1024 x 768 when needed. Also, my screen is a 15.6-inch 1080p display.
I recall playing Wing Commander 4 in 1280x1024 and feeling like I was in paradise. It's not about the number of pixels your screen has—it's about how effectively they're used to create satisfying visuals. There are titles on the Switch (at 720p and below) that appear more appealing than many PS4/Xbox One games. Art is personal. Games can be considered art. Higher resolutions might look better if executed well, but lower resolutions are perfectly fine too.
Used 1080p for a long time. Got a 1440p screen once, sold it a while back. 1080p works fine for me and I don’t expect to upgrade much higher in the next decade!
