XMP problem. 8700k, 3200MHz C16 RAM
I believe I made a mistake when I turned on XMP. Although I noticed some improvements in frame rates during certain games, my RealBench score decreased and I started experiencing some stuttering in others. I’m not sure if synthetic bench scores should increase with faster RAM.
The stuttering is the main concern. I can’t use the full RAM speed without XMP, but it also negatively affects performance. I read about adjusting power settings to prioritize performance over balanced in the BIOS (I don’t remember the exact location), but I’ve had problems with that before (Asus’ preset settings are terrible). I’m considering overclocking eventually, but I don’t have the time right now.
I also use AI Suite 3 if it matters. What should I do?
Key details:
CPU: i7 8700k @stock
MB: Asus ROG Maximus X Formula
RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB (2x8GB) 3200MHz C16 (currently 2133MHz C15 at stock)
Rest of the build is first in my signature.
A clean install is planned so all drivers and software are up to date as of last week.
Possible unrelated issue: My desktop icons flicker occasionally when playing windowed games (Steam version of Adventure Capitalist caught me off guard). I think it happens at any time, though. Any suggestions? I run MSI:AB almost nonstop, and that’s essentially the only program running in the background all the time.
Are the XMP configurations aligned with the RAM that came in? Could require additional SA or IO adjustments.
Is there any stability testing performed on RAM, whether stock or XMP enabled?
XMP can be inaccurate; manual setting entry is recommended.
I notice many inquiries regarding issues when using high-speed memory with the 8700K. As it is officially DDR4-2666Mhz, I would manually adjust the memory settings to that speed unless overclocking. Key aspects include: memory clock, DRAM timings, and DRAM voltage.
I joined 2666 as well, since my brothers wouldn't go to 3200.
This situation seems quite intriguing. Are there any possible explanations for what's happening? Do you think a solution exists? I'm just hoping my PC starts up properly. 😊
I plan to purchase some Vengeance RGB sticks once I've paid off the board and CPU, but I was actually aiming for 3466MHz RAM. Is that still feasible?
Sure, I'll keep things similar but adjust the phrasing slightly.
I think I'll just test it out at stock right now and check how it behaves before adding the new RAM. Got any thoughts on why the icon keeps flickering?
