XMP Instability
XMP Instability
Hey there, I've been working on adjusting the settings for my memory kit. When I apply XMP profile 1, TestMem5 starts giving errors. The BIOS and chipset drivers are up to date, so I think the timing or voltage might need tweaking. My CPU is a 5800X3D, the memory is a 4x16GB 3600MHz kit, and I'm using an MSI MPG X570S board. Right now it runs fine without any XMP enabled, but I'm looking for advice on what changes could help the 3600 configuration work. Any suggestions?
First step would be to verify if the memory ICs match on all units. Just because two sets share the same model number doesn't guarantee compatibility. If you purchased this as a 4x16GB package, that applies—those are confirmed to work together. But if you bought it as two 2x16GB units, this is the initial check to make. You can quickly assess in CPU-Z under the SPD section; ensure DRAM Manufacturer info is consistent across all slots. Alternatively, use a tool like Thaiphoon Burner to inspect each DIMM's SPD and confirm identical Die Density/Count values. Even Thaiphoon Burner isn't perfect, but it's uncommon. While doing this, also verify whether each stick is single or dual rank. Running four dual-rank DIMMs can strain the memory controller and may cause problems at 3600MT/s. Four single-rank units are fine. Once confirmed the memory type is uniform, try adjusting the SOC voltage—your 5800X3D might need a boost from 1.15V to 1.2V for stable performance. The ideal range is around 1.1V–1.2V, with 1.15V being a reasonable target. If that doesn't stabilize things, leave it at the current setting and monitor. Increasing DRAM voltage slightly could also help. If neither works, gradually lower the frequency until stability returns. For the 5800X3D, memory performance usually has little impact, so differences between 3600CL18 and 3400CL18 are unlikely to be noticeable.
All four DIMMs come from the identical package and CPU-Z confirms this. I've tested them with versions 1.15 and 1.2, but issues persist. It seems the memory controller might be struggling, so I might need to spend a day fine-tuning it.
