Hi everyone, my setup is a Ryzen 5900X which works well. I’m also running a few virtual machines and games on it, but I’m considering a Dual Xeon E5-2698R for better value. I’m curious about its gaming performance since it’s not exactly what Xeons are built for. Having 40 cores compared to the 12 on my current system would be beneficial for running more VMs and learning Linux. What do you think?
Usually quite disappointing, but can be functional if you stick to simpler titles. Xeons aren't built for gaming, and better alternatives exist today. What makes you need VMS beyond basic requirements? Also, VMS often fail with anti-cheat and DRM systems, making many games unusable.
From my perspective without real experience, sticking with the 5900x would likely be best for gaming performance. Unless you intended to upgrade your rig by selling it for an Xeon system, keeping the two machines separate makes sense. Also, running Linux on the server adds another layer of complexity for gaming purposes. I've seen this happen before.
