Xeon E5 2690 v3 processor
Xeon E5 2690 v3 processor
Hello, I'm considering an upgrade and came across the e5 2690 v3. I found few videos about it, mostly from around five years ago by Linus, and others from different e5 26 models like the 2640. I'm curious if this chip is suitable for gaming. Also, I want to unlock the turbo boost, so older content might not show the performance I expect. If anyone can assist, that would be really helpful. Please let me know if there are any errors in my writing—I'm not a native speaker.
Xeons are locked. Good luck. https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/...0-ghz.html That's a Haswell CPU, from 2014 which is 6 gens behind (4series) Whether you can game on it or not, depends on the game you want to play. For the record, I game just fine (for the whopping 2 games I play) on my 3rd gen dual Xeon workstation, but I am under no illusions that it's capable for general gaming.
You're already aware of what you're getting with your x3440. The main thing to compare is its performance versus the 2640 v3 and other similar chips. Regarding turbo boost, it's definitely achievable on these platforms, and many capable CPUs can handle it well. When choosing between models like the 1650 v3, consider factors like price, cooling, and future upgrades rather than just raw turbo potential.
I believe a more common configuration would be preferable, such as a Ryzen 3 or 5, instead of navigating the quirks of Chinese boards and BIOS modifications. Fascinating for a CPU enthusiast, but I think you're looking for complications in your everyday work. Even an R3 1200 would offer significant improvement over a X3440 and provide far more opportunities for future upgrades. (I recently purchased an R7 1700X for 150 CAD.)
Thanks for your support and the tips you shared—it might seem costly now, but it could become more expensive later. Despite the significant risks, I’m open to taking them. I’ve decided to switch to something more stable and less risky, like a 1680 v2, though I’d still appreciate your thoughts. Once again, thank you for being kind and helpful. I’ve been in these forums recently and found them very informative and useful.
I've noticed a few benchmarks and sometimes 1680 v2 comes pretty close to a Ryzen 9 processor I can't afford. I used an x3440 for about a year and a half without major issues. Of course, it's not the top choice, but it worked fine when my budget was tight. Still, I think with proper care and maintenance, CPUs can last a long time.
