Xeon E3-1240 V5 paired with ASUS B250G motherboard
Will this combination work? I found this cpu listed locally and the seller said it was working on his ASUS Prime H270 motherboard and it should work with my B250 as well. Its not listed on Asus site as a supported cpu. Is it worth to try? Can I damage my motherboard if its not compatible?
You can simply test it and check if it functions. How much does the CPU cost? If it's over $30, consider selling your current motherboard and CPU, and purchase a used B450/3D for around $50 plus a 3600(x) for $50-60. This will significantly reduce that old Skylake CPU, even in a modest used market where you might only find 3100/3300X or 3500X options, which can still outperform the old Skylake Xeon and provide a path to the 5800X3D for $200-250.
