It should work, but as Random mentioned, you won't receive most of the advantages Z97 provides.

Unless he wishes to SLI, @ rektrobin check out your posts. There are additional benefits to the Z series platform beyond just overclocking.

Only because I have fast RAM matters. Most boards I've looked at, such as H97 and B85, only support 1600. It would be great if future models offered more options.

You can simply use an H81, it will function identically to its performance on the higher-end Z97 board.

Absolutely, from a CPU perspective, it performs similarly when using this chip on the H81 board.
